A Toast to St. Patrick

Killian
This deep, ruby red beer is full-bodied with an aroma and flavor
of toasted caramel. The original beer was first brewed in 1864 in
Enniscorthy, Ireland, but it wasn’t until 1981 that the first Killian’s
Irish Red was sold in America. I like it paired with burgers, steaks,
and fish and chips.
Guinness Black Lager
Arthur Guinness brewed his first porter and ale in 1759 at his
brewery in St. James’s Gate Dublin. By 2007, 10 million glasses
of Guinness were being poured every year. New Guinness Black
Lager is cold-brewed with roasted barley. It smells like a porter,
but tastes like a lager. The sweetness of the beer pairs well with
strong flavors like Irish blue cheese.
Harp’s
One half of the famous Black andTan (Guinness is the other), this
tasty, pale yellow/gold lager was originally crafted by the Guinness
Brewery in 1960. Made with pure water from the Cooley Moun-
tains in Dundalk, Ireland, it is crisp, light bodied and has a nice
hop taste. It is a great drinking beer, so you can serve it alone or
with chicken or seafood.
Smithwick’s Superior
This is one of the most famous
examples of Irish red ale.
John Smithwick opened his
Kilkenny brewery on the site
of an ancient monastery, St.
Francis Abbey, in 1710. Slightly
sweet and toasty, with caramel
and roasted barley flavors, try
it paired with sausage, or the
traditional St. Patrick’s dish,
corned beef and cabbage.
