I
’ll do practically anything to escape the unrelenting heat of a Gulf Coast
summer. When I can’t get to the beach, I’ll grab a snowball, catch a swim, or
just stand in the frozen food aisle and think cold-cold-cold-cold.
Here’s a bit of local summer trivia: While Brooks Brothers claims they were first
to introduce seersucker fabric, it was actually created by New Orleans tailor Joseph
Haspel and his brothers. Two layers of thread, one slack, one taught, create that
crinkled texture that keeps seersucker cool. Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart wore
Haspel suits in movies, but to me, the most memorable Haspel seersucker suit ever
was the three-piece Gregory Peck wore in
To Kill AMockingbird
.
It makes sense that the seersucker suit and snowballs were both invented by locals
to combat our local heat. With help from the
Idea Village
, three local college
friends invented yet another way:
Cordina
.
Check out their story on page 24.
Finally, the unrelenting heat is one thing, but the unpredictable summer weather
is what has us on alert. We understand all too well the dangers of hurricanes and
tropical storms, and stock our stores with extra hurricane supplies just in case. I
encourage you to do the same at home.

YOU’RE EITHER LOCAL OR YOU’RE NOT
You know you’re a local if you order
your sandwich dressed! Beginning with
Columbus, our new line of premium deli
meats, we asked what makes the perfect
sandwich, from spreads to breads. We
also found a recipe from Jimmy Buffett’s
Margaritaville for a Cheeseburger in
Paradise, dressed, of course, with lettuce
and tomato.
