"Berries have some of the highest antioxidant
content of any fruit and are great sources of
several phytochemicals that seem to help
block cancer development. Strawberries are
a fabulous source of Vitamin C, anthocyanins
and ellagic acid, which have both been shown
in laboratory tests to inhibit the growth of
some cancer cells."

LOCAL Hot House Tomatoes
Greenhouses like the ones at Hoffstadt Farms in Kentwood,
Louisiana, make it possible to have fresh, flavorful tomatoes
in and out of Louisiana’s in-ground tomato season. Our
farmer, Henry Hoffstadt, Jr., and his father have been growing
greenhouse tomatoes for more than 30 years. Their tomatoes
are ripened on the vine, hand picked and delivered to our store
within 24 hours.
LOCAL Hydroponic
Butter Lettuce
You can’t get more fresh, more local, or
cleaner than this lettuce, which is grown
in a 7,000-foot tree-shaded greenhouse on
Highway 311 in Schriever, and delivered to
us less than 24 hours after harvest. Farmer
Lee Fontenot’s hydroponic system uses
nutrient-rich water instead of soil.
LOCAL Strawberries
We love strawberries so much we’ve
packaged our own. Whole fields of local
strawberries are grown just for us on
local farms like Liuzza Produce Farm in
Independence. The farm is owned and
operated by Anthony and Lucinda Liuzza,
their two sons, Joey and Kevin and Kevin’s
wife, Elizabeth. Anthony is a fourth
generation farmer.
LOCAL Citrus
Some of the best citrus in the world is
grown right here in our backyard. We’re
getting fresh deliveries of local grapefruits,
navel oranges, Meyer lemons and kumquats
throughout the week. If you haven’t tried a
Meyer lemon yet, you’re in for a sweet treat;
these bright yellow lemons are sweeter and
less acidic than regular ones.
Also look for these local favorites:
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage & sweet
potatoes
California Citrus
More than 80% of the fruit and vegetables
served in the United States are grown in
California. January and February are great
months for citrus.
Cara Cara
These seedless navel oranges have a bright
orange exterior and distinctive pinkish red
flesh that’s sweet with a tangy cranberry-
like zing.
Moro
These are beautiful oranges. Smaller, with a
thin skin, and few to no seeds, Moro’s have a
bright red to deep maroon flesh, and intense
orange flavor with hints of fresh raspberry.
Pummelos
These are the largest of all citrus fruit. They
have a round, slightly pear shape, with a
thick, spongy rind and pink to rosy flesh.
The flavor is much sweeter and less acidic
than that of its cousin, the grapefruit.
Zebra Lemons
Pink Zebra™ lemons are prized by chefs
and mixologists because of their looks and
tastes. They have a yellow and green striped
rind and pink flesh, and are slightly less
acidic than conventional lemons.
Tangelos
If you like Satsumas, you’ll like Tangelos.
They range from the size of a standard
sweet orange to the size of a grapefruit,
and have a loose skin like a Satsuma, which
makes them easy to peel.
