boy with fried shrimp, oysters, and homemade crabmeat
dressing. The
Ole Biloxi Schooner
in Biloxi presses
their po-boys. So does
Pirate’s Cove
in Pass Christian
(try the fried flounder po-boy and corn nuggets). And
while the seafood muffaletta at
Parran’s
in Metairie
isn’t technically a po-boy, it does feature fried shrimp,
catfish and oysters in a homemade Cajun mayo.
RoAST BeeF
At
Parkway Bakery
in Mid City, they toast the French
bread until the interiors are just browned before adding
lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayonnaise, roast beef and
gravy. Over at
Parasol’s
in the Garden District, they
boil an inside round in plain water for about an hour
and a half; the only seasoning comes from the gravy.
And rather than toast the French bread before building
the sandwich, Parasol’s toasts their po-boys whole.
Bear’s
in Covington and
R&O’s
in Bucktown serve
a sloppy roast beef with tons of house-made gravy.
Pontchartrain Po-Boy’s
is in the same shopping center
as our Beau Chen store in Mandeville;
Short Stop
in
Metairie is just down the street from our Clearview
store.We discovered
DiMartinoMuffaletta’s
roast beef
po-boys (yes, po-boys) when we opened our General
DeGaulle store.

ReMoulAde
Ye Old College Inn
, which is down the street from our
Carrollton store,
and a favorite for their onion rings and
oyster loaf
,
won Best of Show at the inaugural Po-Boy
festival in New Orleans with a fried green tomato and
shrimp remoulade po-boy. A few years later, they took the
trophy again: this time for their fried bread pudding po-boy.
oySTeR loAF
Cassamento’s
by our Tchoupitoulas store in NewOrleans is famous
for it’s oyster loaf on Texas-size toast, but it’s Lower Alabama where
you find the most seafood loaves. The fried shrimp and oyster loaves
at
Lulu’s
by our Gulf Shores market and the
Dew Drop Inn
on
Old Shell Road in Mobile are both excellent.
The peACeMAKeR
The Peacemaker at
Mahoney’s
combines fried oysters and fried
shrimp.
AcmeOysterHouse
serves theirs withTABASCO® infused
mayo. Get a side of Boo Fries with roast beef gravy and cheese.
SuRF & TuRF
You can’t miss with the fried shrimp with roast beef debris at
Domilise’s
and
Parkway Bakery
. Go for it and order it dressed,
with cheese.
CoChoN de lAIT
The Legend at
Katie’s
by our Carrollton store in Mid City features
smoked cochon de lait and barbecued shrimp. It’s decadent and
delicious.
Walker’s BBQ
in New Orleans East has earned a festival
following for their Cochon de Lait po-boy
(for more on Walker’s, see
our March-April issue of MyRouses everyday at
).
VeAl
Sammy’s Po-Boys
on Veterans Boulevard has an incredibly tender
fried veal cutlet po-boy that you can order with red gravy or dressed.
Add mozzarella and order a side of the baked macaroni.
FReNCh FRy
R&O’s Restaurant
in Bucktown was voted best roast beef po-boy in
New Orleans by a local newspaper, but if you’re a meat-and-potatoes
person get the French fry po-boy topped with thick beef gravy.
The KeNNedyS & The oBAMAS
“Sunday, August 29, 2010. The first customer of the day
was a Sewage and Water Board worker. Two hours later,
the President of the United States and his family are
sitting there, in my restaurant, eating my shrimp po-boys
(dressed, of course).”
